A pioneer of stealth technology, he has been the driving force behind the development of low observable technology and weapons systems; his technical breakthrough contributions have made possible aircraft such as the F-22, the F/A18, and the Comanche attack helicopter; recent focus is on unique treatments for air and battlefield products that make them virtually invisible (stealth aircraft). Dr. Atkins received the Academy's 2000 Fellows Award.
