Roger
Beachy is founding
president and
director of the
Donald Danforth
Plant Science
Center in St.
Louis. He is known
internationally
for his work in
molecular virology,
gene expression,
and biotechnology,
and in particular
for his development
of transgenic
plants that are
resistant to viral
infection. Beachy
was born in Ohio
and received a
B.A. degree from
Goshen College,
followed by a
doctorate in botany
and plant pathology
from Michigan
State University
in 1972. After
postdoctoral fellowships
at the University
of Arizona and
Cornell University,
Beachy held faculty
appointments at
Washington University
in St. Louis and
at the Scripps
Research Institute
in San Diego.
