at the Applied
Research Laboratory
and licensed
by Washington
University to
the company.
Dr. Cox’s
research interests
include the
application
of computers
to biomedicine
and advanced
computer networking.
He led groups
that developed
the first radiation
treatment planning
system that
utilized computer
graphics, the
first computer-based
monitoring system
for cardiac
arrhythmias,
and the first
computer imaging
system for nuclear
medicine.
More recently
he has collaborated
with colleagues
in the Department
of Radiology
in the emerging
field of electronic
radiology. He
founded the
Biomedical Computer
Laboratory at
Washington University
and chaired
the newly formed
Department of
Computer Science
(1975-1991).
He was director
of the Applied
Research Laboratory
and was research
director of
the Electronic
Radiology Laboratory.
He has published
over 100 scientific
papers in computing
and networking
and has been
active on various
advisory committees
for the National
Institutes of
Health, the
National Science
Foundation and
the Department
of Defense.
He is a Senior
Member of the
Institute of
Medicine of
the National
Academy of Science.
