World-class researcher in molecular biology in gene regulation; leader to improve teaching of "hands-on" science in the St. Louis area schools; developed inquiry-based life science and physical science curricula for K-8 and high school teachers, provided in-service training and materials; worked with NAS Science Content Working Group to develop the National Science Education Standards for K-12. Dr. Elgin received the Academy's 2000 Fellows Award.
