A pioneer in
the biochemistry
and molecular
biology of animal
viruses. His
contributions
to the molecular
biology of adenoviruses
(Ads) laid the
foundation for
research worldwide
on virus replication,
human cell molecular
biology, and
neoplastic transformation.
He developed
the Ad system
into a powerful
tool by purifying
and molecularly
characterizing
the thirty-one
know human Ads
and their genetic
material, established
a molecular
basis for the
classification
of oncogenics
Ads, demonstration
of the oncogenicity
of purified
virus and the
fact that cell
transformation
required the
persistence
and expression
of specific
viral oncogenes
enormously simplified
subsequent studies
on the mechanism
of viral carcinogenesis.
His early studies
were major contributions
to the general
armamentarium
of techniques
and concepts
used in experimental
virology today.
Dr. Green showed
that Ads are
not involved
in human cancer.
