Combining fundamental science with technology, he pioneered development of solid phase peptide synthetic methods now used almost universally in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and related disciplines; pioneered computational methods used to analyze and understand peptides in academics, pharmaceutical companies and industry; (combinatorial chemistry, the major innovation in drug discovery of the 1990s would have been impossible without this work); pioneered development of HIV protease inhibitors for treatment of AIDS.
