Academy Fellows // Helen Piwnica-Worms, Ph.D.

Helen Piwnica-Worms, Ph.D.
Helen Piwnica-Worms, Ph.D.
Professor, cell biology and physiology, Washington University; program leader, cellular proliferation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Research focuses on how the human cell division cycle is regulated and how perturbations in cell cycle control contribute to human cancer. Her lab applies molecular biological, biochemical, cell biological and targeted gene knock-out approaches to 1)understand how the cyclin-dependent protein kinases (Cdks) are regulated throughout the cell cycle, 2) to identify both upstream regulators and downstream targets of the Cdks and 3) to elucidate mechanistically how proteins involved in checkpoint control interact with cell cycle regulators to inhibit key cell cycle transitions.
