Professor and Chair, Genome Sciences, University of Washington

Developed and applied DNA mapping and sequencing techniques on a large scale, allowing identification of all genes comprising an organism. Founded Washington University School of Medicine's Genome Sequencing Center, which has identified the largest number of human genes of any group in the world. Lead the team to complete the sequence of the human genome and require the prompt release of data. Dr. Waterston received the Academy's 2000 Peter H. Raven Lifetime Award.
